What do you want from life? Too much of our time is spent thinking about what we should be doing, rather than doing and this mind wandering takes up roughly 50% of our waking hours. I often think about spending more time with my family, or how I can get more fulfillment from my business. I often think about how I can offer authentic value to my customers and improve my health. I’m guessing that many people are in my shoes. The reality is that our thoughts about what it means to live a successful life are shaped by external stimuli: family, friends, and our environment.

Having dreams and imagining the things we want to do and striving to attain them is the very essence of being human. But before you work your butt off to achieve your goals, you need to make sure that the goals you set are in line with your own vision of a successful life. You must define prosperity for yourself. There are six types of prosperity: physical (health), mental, financial, spiritual, emotional, and relational or social. For each type you must determine for yourself what achieving success in it means.

Society has embedded in all of us the idea that accumulating enormous wealth and being famous is success. That’s how everyone thinks, and that’s what we have learned from childhood. It is a well-known fact that some parents try to fulfill their unfulfilled achievements through their kids. Whilst this experience is a remedy for unresolved disappointments from their past it leads to their children struggling to shape their own identities. The key to an optimal life is to know exactly how you want to spend your time and what success means to you.

Once you know where you want to go, it’s time to get started and achieve your goals. As you work hard to achieve these goals, you will undoubtedly experience setbacks. Life doesn’t always go as you plan, and external circumstances can set you back.

When you experience setbacks, you must make choices. You can let this failure get to you, or you can use it as motivation to work even harder. The problem is that feelings and emotions tend to take over in moments of setback and hold back those seeking success from moving forward towards their goals.

You can watch videos, listen to audio, and read written content that motivates you and teaches you what would help you achieve your goals. Access to content can be the difference between success or failure after a setback.

If you’re working on developing healthy habits, one healthy habit can be getting constant sources of inspiration. There are leaders you can follow and learn from – model their success. After a setback, you need to tap into these sources of inspiration.

Use your daily self-optimization time to find new sources of inspiration and examples of success. The more you develop the habit of consuming inspiring and motivating content, the more you will be able to tap into this source during setbacks.

Be sure to source content from those who are living real lives. The goal is not to find good-looking content, but to find authentic examples of leadership. Don’t be seduced by false images of success because they can also contribute to your failures. Fill your mind and thoughts with inspiring and motivating content from those who are committed to authenticity.

6. Use setbacks as fuel to work harder to achieve your goals

You can achieve your goals by starving yourself to achieve more in your life. While some people see setbacks as events that lead to goal achievement, you can look at them as inspiration to work even harder.

Motivation can take any form you want it to. Dealing with failures can be incredibly motivating and the fuel you need to get back on your feet and get stronger. 7. Take this goal-setting journey step by step

We tend to think about the big picture when we look at achieving our goals. We look at the end goal and the thousand steps it will take to get there. The whole view can be frustrating.

The motivation to achieve your goals comes from seeing progress. As you do this step by step, you will experience some victories. Although we think that the end goal is what we want, it is progress that motivates us the most.

Break your goals down into bite-sized pieces. Set a definite timeline and a plan for completing each step. As you start to accomplish the smaller pieces of your goals, you’ll be motivated as you see yourself making progress toward the bigger vision.
